The Speed Reels provides a fast and tangle free way to set line for a remote pull.
The handle is geared up with respect to the spindle, which allows line to be pulled in very quickly. The XL holds 200′ of 5/64″ line. The Kernmantle line has a UHMWPE core (also known by the trademark names Dyneema and Spectra), surrounded by a polyester sleeve. This combination gives high strength and low stretch along with abrasion resistance and durability. Reel materials are stainless steel, delrin, and aluminum, providing excellent corrosion resistance.
So why not just daisy chain your line? After all, daisy chaining adds no weight, no bulk, is 100% reliable when done correctly, and costs nothing but time. When paying out the line a daisy chain is just as good as a reel, but what about recovering line? If you, as a dismounted Tech, have to pack up and move in a hurry the line will almost certainly be shoved in a dump pouch or cargo pocket. And the line will be useless in a follow on IED, because it takes ten minutes to untangle and re-daisy chain. And that’s why we built these reels.
The Speed Reel XL can be carried in the STS-4P Pouch. The advantage is that line can be pulled out for a couple arm lengths and all the rigging done without removing the reel from the pouch. This means one less thing to juggle while setting up a remote pull. Once everything is set the reel can be removed from the pouch to spool out line while heading up range.
