Description
Bullet Hole Testing Kit
The Bullet Hole Testing Kit gives investigators a practical method for examining suspected bullet holes at crime scenes and during forensic examinations. When a projectile passes through a material, it can leave trace metal residues around the margins of the resulting hole. The kit helps investigators detect these residues quickly and simply.
These deposits commonly include lead and copper from the projectile. Therefore, detecting these metals can help investigators assess a suspected bullet hole. In addition, the results can support further examination relating to projectile calibre and the possible direction of fire.
How the Test Works
First, the technician applies a few drops of the appropriate reagent to Benchkote test paper, a plastic-backed filter paper. The technician then places the prepared paper against the area surrounding the suspected bullet hole.
The kit stores each reagent inside a sealed glass ampoule within a specially designed protective plastic tube. As a result, the technician can break and activate the ampoule while reducing direct contact with the chemicals.
The complete 4-step testing procedure takes approximately 3–4 minutes from sampling to the final result. Therefore, investigators can quickly screen several suspected bullet holes during a single crime scene or forensic examination.
In addition, one set of test tubes can examine several suspected bullet holes. Consequently, technicians can work efficiently when they need to examine multiple areas.
Designed for Crime Scene Examination
The kit combines straightforward operation with rapid results. Crime scene technicians and other appropriately trained personnel can carry out the procedure after receiving basic instruction.
Furthermore, the portable case keeps the reagents, test papers, documentation materials and photographic scale together. Therefore, technicians can keep the equipment organised and readily available for use at the scene.
The kit also includes plastic evidence bags for retaining positive test papers after examination. As a result, technicians can preserve the completed test papers as part of the scene documentation or submit them for subsequent forensic examination.
