Use Crystal Violet to develop latent fingerprints on the adhesive side of almost any kind of tape, e.g., Scotch, electrical, Kraft, etc. Mix the powder in water, soak the tape in the solution and rinse with running tap water. The problem of working with Crystal Violet powder or solution is that it is a very messy dye and will stain skin, clothes, floors and countertops. It may be very difficult, if not impossible, to remove the stains from some clothing, furniture and floor covering. Crystal Violet is also often used as a “theft detection powder.” Firstly, the item is first VERY lightly dusted with the powder, and when the item comes into contact with moisture (for example, the thief’s hands), it turns dark purple and stains anything that comes into contact with it. However, this use is NOT suggested due to the messy nature of the product and the fact that the stains DO NOT come out of most surfaces. Shelf-life of Crystal Violet powder: indefinite. The working solution should not be kept much longer than 3-6 months. While older solutions may continue to work, the results might not be as good.

You can use Crystal Violet – Purity 85% to develop high-contrast prints on almost any adhesive tape. For instance, it works effectively on Scotch tape, electrical tape, and Kraft paper tapes.
  • Simple Application: To begin, you mix the 85% purity powder with water to create a working solution. Next, soak the tape in the liquid and simply rinse it under running tap water.
  • Visual Results: The reaction produces a deep purple stain on the fingerprint ridges. Consequently, you can easily photograph the evidence against the tape’s backing.

Theft Detection Properties

Historically, some investigators have used Crystal Violet as a “theft detection powder.” In this application, a technician lightly dusts an object with the dry powder. When a suspect touches the item, their skin moisture activates the dye. However, we do not suggest this use. Because the dye is incredibly messy, it permanently stains skin, clothing, and furniture. Therefore, you should only use it in a controlled laboratory setting.
Shelf Life and Professional Handling
We supply this reagent in a 25-gram quantity, which offers an indefinite shelf life in powder form. Once you mix the working solution, it remains effective for approximately 3 to 6 months. While older solutions may still function, they often yield lower-quality results.
Always handle this dye with extreme care. Because it is a highly persistent stainer, it will ruin floors, countertops, and clothing upon contact.
