Description
Footprint – Tyre Casting Frame
The Footprint – Tyre Casting Frame provides a lightweight and adjustable solution for containing dental stone when investigators cast footwear, tyre and other three-dimensional impressions at a crime scene.
The aluminium frame creates a defined boundary around the impression and helps control the flow of dental stone during pouring. As a result, crime scene investigators can produce a cleaner, more manageable cast while reducing the unnecessary spread of casting material across the surrounding surface.
Adjustable Aluminium Casting Frame
Each Footprint – Tyre Casting Frame consists of two U-shaped aluminium sections and two removable connector slides.
The overlapping sections allow investigators to adjust the frame to suit different footwear and impression sizes. In addition, the overlap system provides approximately 8 inches or more of adjustment, giving the examiner greater flexibility when positioning the frame around the evidence.
Once the examiner selects the required size, they position the frame around the impression and pour the prepared dental stone inside the defined area. Therefore, the frame helps keep the casting material concentrated around the impression rather than allowing it to spread unnecessarily.
Designed for Footwear and Impression Evidence
The compact dimensions make this casting frame particularly suitable for footwear impressions. However, investigators may also use it for smaller tyre impressions and other suitable three-dimensional marks.
The frame works particularly well with impressions in soil, mud and similar surfaces where the mark contains sufficient depth and detail for casting.
Furthermore, the aluminium sides help retain the dental stone while it sets. This controlled casting area helps create a suitable thickness around the impression and makes subsequent recovery and handling easier.
Reusable and Easy to Transport
Unlike many improvised or disposable containment methods, the Footprint – Tyre Casting Frame offers a reusable solution for impression recovery.
After the dental stone has set, the examiner simply removes the two connector slides and separates the U-shaped sections. Consequently, the frame quickly reduces to a compact size for storage and transportation.
Its lightweight aluminium construction also makes it easy to carry as part of a crime scene examination kit. For example, teams can store the frame in crime scene vehicles, footwear evidence kits or specialist impression recovery equipment.
After each examination, personnel should clean the frame in accordance with their organisation’s equipment-cleaning and contamination-control procedures. This also allows the frame to return to service ready for future examinations.
Practical Crime Scene Application
The adjustable construction allows investigators to set up the frame quickly around the impression they wish to recover. Moreover, the removable connectors mean that the examiner does not need to lift the completed cast through a fixed frame after the dental stone has hardened.
Instead, the sections separate from around the finished cast. This feature therefore helps simplify recovery while reducing unnecessary handling of the newly created impression cast.
The reusable construction also provides a practical option for forensic teams that regularly recover footwear and tyre impression evidence.
