Body Sheeting Black

Why sheathing the body first is best practice

Wrapping (or “sheathing”) a body in an appropriate sheet or body sheeting before placing it into an external body bag is standard practice in death-investigation work because it protects evidence, people, and the scene. Quick summary of the main reasons:

  • Preserves trace evidence on the body and clothing. Fibres, hairs, paint, soil, gunshot residue, adhesive fragments and similar fragile traces sit on skin and clothing and can be lost or transferred if the body is handled directly or rubbed against the inside of a bag. Sheeting stabilizes those materials and reduces friction and movement.
  • Prevents cross-contamination. A layer between the decedent and the bag reduces transfer of suspect material from the body to the bag (and vice versa). That makes later laboratory comparison cleaner and helps maintain the integrity of scene-derived evidence.
  • Controls leakage and fluid loss. Sheeting helps catch or channel blood and other bodily fluids so they don’t contaminate the outside of the bag, the vehicle, or other evidence at the scene. That also protects handlers and reduces the need for decontamination.
  • Protects fragile surface evidence (wounds, trace deposits). Printed impressions, fragile ligature marks, abrasions and surface deposits can be smeared or obscured by direct contact with a bag. A sheeting layer reduces that risk.
  • Eases movement and reduces mechanical damage. Folding/rolling the sheeting around the body creates a stable package that resists tearing, snagging or loss of small items (e.g., loose jewelry, taped evidence) during lifting and transport.
  • Improves chain of custody and documentation. Sheeting creates a predictable, consistent exterior to the immediate package, which aids visual inspection and logging. Many teams also label the sheeting itself (time, initials) before placing it in the external bag.
  • Enhances safety for personnel. The sheeting adds a barrier against direct contact with fluids and reduces splash/transfer during handling.
  • Maintains respect and dignity. A wrapped body presents a neater, more private appearance during movement and transport.
